@ cam! Yep, they all bite DM, just some have really tiny mouth parts. In the desert there are spiders that get in your boots and when you put your foot in they inject with an anesthetic as they bite! You don't feel it and they can go on gorging on your foot until you take your boot off and see the blood . I'm not too keen on those ones!

cam. Well if you're going to have a nightmare, make it a good 'un! Bear this in mind - put simply, they don't really 'bite' - when most spiders have immobalised their prey, they inject it with chemicals that paralyse it and 'liquify' everything internal, which they can then suck out - bit like a smoothy, I suppose! That's why you only find the dry husks of insects in the web. There are a few spiders, like the camel spider from the desert, which exudes chemicals strong enough to have this liquifying effect on human flesh - believe me, it IS well nasty! - most just feel like a painful sting for a few days at most. Also, you know the dried up 'dead' spiders you find around the house? *whispers* they are not really dead! Spiders can live for 25 - 30 years and shed their skins as they get bigger. So no matter how big the 'husk' you find, the spider is that left it is nearly three times bigger! Sweet dreams!

You gotta admit, they are pretty awesome predators! The 'new' boys on the block, moving up from the continent as the climate grows more to their liking, are truly impressive. They look a bit like our native long-legs spider, but a bit less delicate and the body is a wee bit longer. They don't need to build a web to trap prey as they 'harpoon' it from some distance with a sort of poison dart attached to a length of web. This immobilises their victim and they can just stroll up and do the 'smoothie' bit (sorry dm!) as they like! This means that they can tackle prey several times their own size, using very little energy! So when you start to notice all the insect life in your house disappearing - hairy house spiders, woodlice, beetles, flys etc, - you'll probably find these chaps around. Also, fewer cobwebs, which is a GOOD thing But it's rather sad to think that they may wipe out many of our native species - even if we don't like them very much!

Harpoon... If they can capture prey much bigger than themselves then we might be next...would not put it past the little devils.

I was trying to get to sleep in my bed once, I was sorting my covers out, as ya do, I saw a tiny shadow move on my covers when I wasn't moving, I thought thats not right... I moved the cover a little, right next to where the shadow had mysteriously moved and this huge great big f******, f*** off spider ran across the cover!
I leapt out of my bed faster than I had ever moved before and I yelled... "F****** Hell...!!!"
I would not get back into my bed until it had gone, and I mean gone as in dead and down the toliet. I s*** myself and I was scared!
I effing hate the little sods... KILL THEM ALLLLLLL!

I almost did! I refused to move until I knew it was dead and down the bog.
I got one of my mates, who was living with me at the time, there were 4 of us, to come and kill th bugger and flush it.
It was horrible!

when I was little if my Dad killed a spider and flushed it down the loo, I wouldn't want to use that loo for a few days as I was worried it would jump back out. Same with putting things in the bin... used to drive my parents nuts! Oh the silly things we do when we're kids!

Don't be silly cam... They can't crawl back up the toilet when you have flushed them down it... they drown, or at least get taken far, far away...
