Its a common belief that the fox sisters were in effect the founders of spiritualism...lets see.....
The bible clearly states that we are not to have anything to do with MEDIUMS ect.
Given the statements in the bible concerning mediums and the like it would seem that even then people were attempting to contact the dead much like they do today.
The fox sisters may have started a new trend but spiritualism was alive and kicking way back when.

DM, if you are 'banned for life' on MH, are you banned for the afterlife too? And how do they police that one? Cam, I don't like to split hairs honey, but to say that the Fox sisters are the 'founders of spiritualism' is a bit like claiming that nobody knew how to breathe until there was Yoga! Various folk have tried to formalise 'spirit' into a controlled, churchy type thing .... and there are good reasons why they have not succeeded, even after all these years! 'Religions' are all about the few controlling the many by manipulating fear. Quite simply, if you are the one who is not afraid, then you have power over those who are - and that power corrupts, it's human nature, I'm afraid. ...and that, in my opinion, is why the bible tells folk to stay away from mediums and the like. Spirit is not able to be contained and controlled, you see, and it's very essence is the taking away of fear. Not very good for the control freaks! By the way, have you ever noticed that the bible is actually a collection of biographies and history? None of the 'spiritual' characters actually contribute in person. Strange huh? That said, mediums are probably best avoided, they can be damn strange folk!

Awwwwww dont..poor DM banned from paradise.. I totally agree misty. The fox sisters have been held up as the leading lights in spiritualism when its been around since biblical times. Religion in its basic form was good for giving people comfort that this is not the only life we have but to my mind religion has become big business and has lost its allure for many. Oh yes.....is a great story told by many different people.

Poor DM! Religion has always been 'big business'. The church even brought in the idea of celibacy so that it's subjects would not give any money they had to family, but plough it back into the church. That's how it got to be so rich!

That is the catholic religion ..yes? Some of the so called proper religions who put down the idea of passing the plate around sell books so is just as bad. All religion like politics is corrupt.

I think spiritualism goes even further back than the bible.

I think you are right junius.
Not up on history especially ancient but didn't the Egyptians used to believe in an afterlife.?

Seems like people forget that. Spiritualism was an integral part at the beginning of man’s evolution. Even the American Indians and Aboriginals worshipped spirits. They used those spirits to guide them in their everyday life.

Exactly!! I guess the fox sisters did start the 'craze' of the spiritualist church though.
