About three times a day my computer suddenly slows right down.It gets so slow I have to turn it off and reboot.
Sometimes I have to switch it off directly from the off button which I know is not good but I have no choice.
I have run virus checks and all seems fine. I have experimented by going on forums one at a time to see if its them but all seem fine there as well.
Any ideas.?

You might have too many programmes running at the same time. Have you defragmented your computer lately?

I have tried that and it made no difference.
Defrag has been done along with clearing out useless files.
I think I might have a clue. I have norton and it scans sites as I go on them. I went on a new site today and the computer froze but I noticed the norton scanner was flickering. I have turned that off now and will see if it happens again.

You have to pay for Norton, I use AVG and it is good and free. I’ve never had any trouble since using it.

I set my computer back to factory settings last week so have 60 days free trial with Norton.
I think I have found the problem.
It was not norton.
I found a flash player helper add on. Where it came from I dont know but daughter has been using my computer. I have deleted it and turned the norton monitoring back on. So far so good but will have to give it a couple of days to be sure.
I did use avg before I got my free trial.

I don’t know if you know but if you put another Virus checker on you must delete the old one completely otherwise it will interfere with the new one. You can delete it from the Add and Remove section. If you go back to AVG when your free trial period is over make sure you delete Norton completely.

When my free time ran out before I could keep norton for firewall ect and just needed a virus checker. It all seemed fine.
Avg is just a virus checker is it not?

I do have vista.I was not aware it has its own firewall. I am totally useless at all this computer stuff. So I can use windows defender and avg and that will be enough to protect me?

That is what I am using. It should be automatically turned on. When you do an operation does it stop you and ask you if you want to go continue? As in down loading something. I also suggest you use Ad-aware... which is also free. you have to run it yourself every so often but it is easy to use. If you need the address then let me know. If you've got Norton's firewall running and Vista's running as well it might cause you problems, but as your Norton will be expiring soon i wouldn't worry about it. If you are not happy with Vista's firewall and want another one you will have to disable Vista's before hand.

"I don’t know if you know but if you put another Virus checker on you must delete the old one completely otherwise it will interfere with the new one" They interfere with each other? That is shocking have you reported it?

yes it does ask me if I want to continue. I tried to use ad-aware but it always says cant get new definitons. I dont seem to have a problem with the firewalls.I think norton just automatically took over.,

It was only recently that they made it compatible with Vista. I'll try again.

Okay thanks. Not heard of that site before. It is from a magazine I subscribe to. Gives you useful hints, workshops and telling you the latest news. And it is all done in layman’s terms. They’ve also got a site with free downloads. They also have a forum where you can ask for advice etc. I’ve used it occasionally when I have had a problem.

It might be the Norton thing that is causing problems. When/ if you remove it and put something free in its place see what happens.

I have used this norton before and had no problems but it looks like it might be the fraud monitoring thingy as it goes off and on.
I might take it off and try avg.
I did think it might be the mh forum as they have new ads so will stay off there tonight and see what happens.
My daughters OH is in IT and is coming over tomorrow so may ask him to take a look.

Other than what I've said I can't think of anything else. I hope you solve it as I know how annoying it can be.

Yes,its fairly new.Only a few months. First time using vista..and the last. Vista's ok... yes it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get on top of it, it is a joy. I wouldn't go back and I've used all the systems from Window's 98 to XP. I've also got it on my lap top as well. After awhile you'll get the hang of it.

I have had so many problems with compatibility. Vista was released so we could be the guinea pigs. We are the ones reporting all the glitches.
