Lumines
Publisher: Ubisoft | Developer: Q Entertainment
Price: $39.99 | ESRB Rating: E10+
Brought stateside by Ubisoft after initially publishing by Bandai in Japan, the first project from visionary creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi's new game studio became one of the most globally talked-about games in the PSP's line-up. The game very basically represents the once-flourishing puzzle genre -- all that Lumines is is a falling block game, made very simple by requiring just one of two colors of blocks be matched in a square shape. The developers at Q Entertainment, however, are masters of simplicity in a way that is elegant, engaging, and exquisite. With their efforts, a game that might gone over with only a grudging quiet just last year (despite its pedigree development team) now rightfully has the center stage position on Sony's new handheld showpiece.
Metal Gear Acid
Publisher: Konami | Developer: Konami JPN
Price: $39.99 | ESRB Rating: M
This new take on the blockbuster Metal Gear franchise gives players a new approach to their espionage. Metal Gear Acid (also lovingly known as Acid Metal by its creators for the trippy take on the series) is a card-based simulation that progresses as a series of missions. Gameplay is somewhat like a 3D board game or RTS, in that players have a set number of moves and actions to take in a given turn sequence -- play out your Weapon card to take down an enemy, play the box Item card to duck into hiding when foes are on patrol, and play the Ninja or Roy Campbell Character card to call in some heavy-duty support from your allies in the field. The English-language edition of the game introduces wireless multiplayer in the VR realm for two-player battles, a feature not found in the original Japanese game.
Spider-Man 2
