Apart from carving pumpkins and doling out sweets, does anybody have any other customs at Halloween? When I was a child, we carved turnips (swedes) instead of pumpkins and played games like ducking for apples, treacle doughnuts on a string that had to be eaten with the hands behind the back and 'the witch is dead' where supposed body parts were handed round in the dark; ie, a peeled grape for an eyeball etc. On a trip to Germany earlier this year, I noticed some brightly coloured and rather noisy mobiles made from painted tin cans. I was told that these were left over from Walpurgisnacht(sic), the spring-time equivelant of Halloween, which is widely celebrated in Germany, with parties and pranks and models of witches on broomsticks everywhere. The idea is that folk make a lot of noise to chase the evil spirits away. Finding this rather charming, I decided to make some for myself this year, collected some cans and got painting. Unfortunately various friends and family asked what I was doing and rather stupidly, I told them. :-[So now I have twelve sets to make! ;D

I've just reread what I originally put.. makes it sound like I'ld be hiding from teenagers watching MHL not that it's ME that will be watching it!
